On Monday, youths marched the streets of Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, calling on President Bola Tinubu to address the troubling issues of insecurity and hunger in Nigeria.
In their hundreds, the protesters, mostly youths, conducted themselves peacefully.
The protesters held placards with such inscriptions on them like; “Tinubu Must Address Insecurity”, “Hunger is Killing Us”,“End Food Hike and Inflation”, “Insecurity Not Our Birthright.”
They decried the economic hardship, saying that they are fed up with the current state of affairs in Nigeria.
The protesters wanted concrete actions taken by the federal government in alleviating the suffering of Nigerians and to improve the country’s economy.
With this protest, the youths are hoping that their demonstration will draw the attention of president Tinubu and the federal government to these pressing issues.
Officers of the Oyo State Police Command were seen at strategic locations in readiness to curb any break down of law and order.
On Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso had in a statement, warned that the command would not tolerate a breakdown of law and order during protests.
“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public particularly residents of Oyo State that it has put in place prompt and adequate measures to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order in the State as a result of plans by faceless agents of mischief to spark up chaos via protests in the State commencing tomorrow, Monday 19/2/2024 within the Capital.
“While the Command respects the right of citizens to a peaceful procession, it is sacrosanct to guide against any violation of public order as Law enforcement must be carried along to chart the course of the procession in a conscious bid to protect the lives and property.”
