Ronaldo, Bale lift Madrid by Dortmund; Liverpool held to draw as Man City win

Cristiano Ronaldo added two goals after Gareth Bale’s opener to help Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in Champions League Group H on Tuesday.

Dortmund should have been handed a penalty in the 14th minute when Maximilian Philipp’s was pushed off the line with the help of Sergio Ramos’ hands, but the defenders part in the clearance went unseen.

And four minutes later, Bale had Madrid in front when he calmly met Dani Carvajal’s cross and volleyed it into the back of the net, leaving Dortmund keeper Roman Burki no chance.

Bale then delivered a low cross to set up Ronaldo to net Madrid’s second goal five minutes into the second half.

But less than four minutes later, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang beat Ramos to a Gonzalo Castro cross to reduce Dortmund’s deficit to 2-1.

In search of an equaliser, Dortmund put on Julian Weigl, Mahmoud Dahoud and Christian Pulisic, but Ronaldo ended their hopes by firing in his second goal past Burki in the 79th minute.

Harry Kane scored his first Champions League hat trick to keep Tottenham level with Madrid after a 3-0 win at Apoel Nicosia.

Kane stayed onside to receive a pass from Toby Alderweireld, setting himself up to score the opener in the 39th minute.

Though Apoel had their own chances to score, Kane doubled Spurs’ lead in the 62nd minute by controlling the ball at the top of the box and stepping up to score.

And the hat trick was complete in the 67th minute as Kane flicked on a header from Kieran Trippier’s cross.

Madrid and Tottenham top the group after two wins apiece, leaving Dortmund and Apoel staring up at six-point deficits after only two matchdays.

Liverpool settled for a second straight draw in Group E after being held 1-1away to Spartak Moscow.

The hosts took the lead in the 23rd minute through Fernando, who sent a stunning free kick over the wall and out of the reach of Loris Karius.

Liverpool struck back on the half-hour mark when Coutinho played a one-two with Sadio Mane before putting the ball in the back of the net for the equaliser, but there was to be no winner.

Meanwhile, Wissam Ben Yedder also scored a hat trick as Sevilla became the first team in Group E to win, 3-0 at home over Maribor.

The opener came after a remarkable run from Joaquin Correa, who flew past half a dozen defenders before laying the ball off for Ben Yedder to score in the 27th minute.

And 11 minutes later Franco Vazquez slipped in Ben Yedder with a through ball for the striker to score his second, and the hat trick was completed from the penalty spot with seven minutes to play.

Manchester City held off Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 to win their second straight game to open Group F.

After a goalless first half, Kevin De Bruyne needed just three minutes to break the deadlock as he received the ball five yards outside of the box and launched a shot into the top corner.

Sergio Aguero had a chance to double the lead in the 72nd minute but had his penalty saved, though Raheem Sterling was able to add a late second by tapping in David Silva’s cross.

Napoli made up for their opening defeat at Shakhtar to cruise past Feyenoord 3-1.

Lorenzo Insigne put Napoli ahead after picking up a loose ball in the middle of the Feyenoord half and delivering a low shot from distance.

Insigne then dedicated the goal to his injured teammate Arkadiusz Milik, who suffered a torn knee ligament this week — though he initially held up the shirt of Piotr Zielinski by accident.

Dries Mertens added a second goal four minutes into the second half, jumping on a loose Feyenoord pass at the back before scoring.

The Dutch side had a chance to get back in the game but Pepe Reina saved Jens Toornstra’s penalty, and soon Jose Callejon netted Napoli’s third after being played in by Mertens.

Sofyan Amrabat gave Feyenoord a late consolation goal.

Besiktas are top of Group G on six points after defeating RB Leipzig 2-0 in a game that was briefly delayed by floodlight issues.

Ryan Babel netted the opener in the 11th minute, putting in a first-timed shot after good work on the wing from Cenk Tosun.

It was 2-0 just before half-time as Anderson Talisca beat his marker to head in Ricardo Quaresma’s cross.

Vincent Aboubakar scored twice to help Porto earn their first points in Group G with a 3-0 win away to Monaco.

Aboubakar tapped in a rebound at the second after Diego Benaglio had made two fine saves for the 31st-minute opener, then turned in Moussa Marega on the counter-attack in the 69th.

Mexico international Miguel Layun added a late third after Monaco somewhat comically failed to clear their lines to complete the Ligue 1 champions’ misery.
