DELTA AT 33 YEARS OF RETROGRESSION

By Zik Gbemre

What are Deltan politicians celebrating for 33 years of creation of Delta state? Are the Deltan politicians celebrating bad leadership, poverty, hunger, unemployment, kidnappings, robberies, killings and youth violence?

Delta state is retrogressing and not progressing. Delta state is not lucky with leaders because supposed elected governors are imposed on the people to loot as they like.

Immediate past Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s made stupendous wealth feasting on the state’s commonwealth from clinging to political offices. Sheriff Oborevwori is now at the helms, amassing wealth from the public treasury like past governors of the state.

Delta state is declining and nothing to celebrate for 33 years. Why are politicians fooling themselves rather than asking selves questions on achievements of the state so far.

Warri and Sapele that were commercial cities are no longer business hubs as it were in Pre-Delta state era. AT & P, Delta Glass Company, Delta Steel Company (DSC), Asaba Textile Mills, Delta Steel Structures Company Enerhen-Effurun,Delta boatyard, uninterrupted Rural Electrification distribution for remote communities have all collapsed.

Once booming sea ports of Sapele, Warri, Koko, Burutu, Okwagbe Wharf have all become idle. Osubi Airport runway/tarmac built by Shell remains unexpanded to accommodate bigger aircrafts to meet the required standard of an airport.

Delta roads are no longer motorable. The only achievement of Delta is looting of public resources by Delta politicians and hangers-on into their private vaults. The best business in Delta is to grab political power.

Every day we are under the choke of irresponsible politicians as leaders of Delta. We have them in all the tribes of Delta. Whenever they have social-cultural events in UK, US you see them being hailed as leaders of the people.

Even Deltans who live in US, UK also join in celebrating these useless politicians who do nothing but looting the wealth of their people. In the grand finale of recent UPU-UK Convention 2024 also tagged as Urhobo Day on 25th August at THE LIGHT HOUSE HALL, 262-274 CAMBERWELL ROAD LONDON SE5 OAY, video clips of these useless politicians dancing and being hailed and celebrated by some Urhobo elites in the UK is so appalling.

What a shameful oddity? I am ashamed of our Delta elites, especially among Urhobos who live in the UK that is considered an advanced country, to be celebrating, hailing and recognising useless politicians who do nothing than looting public resources.

In the Pre-Delta era people like Michael Ibru, Gamaliel Onosode and David Dafinone were well respected and appreciated for bringing honour to Midwest/Bendel state and Urhobo nation before the creation of Delta state.

Those were some of our great men. These were people who created wealth by their hard earned roles in Nigeria and not political thieves.
In the Pre-Delta era I didn’t remember any day we went to bed in darkness without electricity in the urban city of Warri.

ECN, later NEPA was supplying electricity 24 hours uninterrupted. Pipeborne water from public taps were running steady. Landlords and residents never bothered digging private boreholes. Water Board was efficient, supplying regular water to every home.

No daily kidnapping, no robbery, no killings, no violent crimes. The post offices were functional to post letters and parcels. Warri was booming 24 hours. Night life was superb with no violent crimes.

Sheriff Oborevwori, like ifeanyi Okowa, is good at rushing to Church or Government House Chaplain to mock self, since you can’t mock God for taking misgovernment of Delta to new lows. Oborevwori knows in his heart that there is nothing to celebrate Delta at 33.

Is Gov Oborevwori celebrating bad governance, appointing a huge crowd of praise singers as commissioners/SSAs or as DGs or members of redundant committees aimed at draining the public treasury of Delta?

The only governor of Delta that brought in wealth of experience and integrity towards building a progressive state was Felix Ibru. He was said to have left N500M in the treasury of Delta when his administration was toppled by the military.

Ibru had wanted to deliver good governance but his administration was short lived. Ibru laid architectural foundation for Delta.
