Financial relief came the way of victims of the recent Yoruba and Hausa communal clash in Ile Ife, Osun State, as Dangote Foundation donated N50 million to 220 victims to cushion the effect of the violence.
At the grand ceremony held at the palace of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwunsi and witnessed by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, yesterday in Ile Ife, the chief executive officer of Dangote Foundation, Zouera Youssoufou said that the Foundation is reinforcing unity, peace between the Hausa and Yoruba community in Ile Ife, in Osun State.
She stated that Dangote Foundation has been active in communal clashes before, and we will continue to intervene in such situation. “We have identified the victim with the team from the Ooni of Ife and the Hausa community and we are giving out N50 million to 220 victims. The amount varies between N200,000 to N2.4 million, but it depend of loses of each person,” she said.
Speaking at the event, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanus said, “We have been asked by several people as northern Emir why we do not make a public statement of the conflict that happened in Ife a few month ago.
“When the sad incident happened, I was in Kong Hong and the Sultan of Sokoto was in United Kingdom, the Ooni of Ife made contact with both of us on what was happening and the action taken.”
He commended the Ooni of Ife for the role in managing the crisis, calling on all the indigene of Ife including the Hausa community to continue to live peacefully with each other and respect the institution and cooperate with each other. According to him, we decided that the affected victim need support and we called on Dangote and he accept to help
Dangote is giving out this cheque of over N50 million to 220 victims who are both Yoruba and Hausa.” Like the Ooni, he commended Dangote for the manner in which he response to humanitarian crisis and assist, saying other wealthy Nigerians should emulate Dangote philanthropic activities to put smile of the faces of the need in the society.
He advised all who are involve in hate speeches to desist and to remember that development can only happen in an environment of peace, the size of the country, population and diversity are great asset.
While, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwuns said, it is very obvious now that the future of the country, the monarch system must definitely work with the private sector as well as the public sector, saying this is one of the results of the collaboration that was seen today. The foundation is in partnership with Access Bank to ensure that all victim received their cheque immediately.
