Over four buildings have been burnt while several cars, motorcycles and properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed following a clash by two rival cult groups in Agbarha -Otor community In Ughelli North local government area of Delta State.
According to sources in the community, trouble was said to have started after a commercial motorcycle operator, popularly known as Okada who had parked his motorbike in front of a vehicle belonging to a rival cult member making it impossible for the vehicle owner to drive out.
Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Following the confrontation between the two rival cult members, the Okada man was attacked by boys loyal to the vehicle owner who are members of same cult group who stabbed the Okada rider with broken bottles.
The two cult group according to the sources are, Aye and Barger confraternities.
The source alleged that, “In a bid to revenge the attack, the Okada man mobilized his gang members, went into town in search of his assailants who had apparently fled the scene of the attack, and unleashed their anger on persons suspected to be members of same cult group as his attackers.
“At the end of the day, at least five buildings where burnt while several cars, motorcycles and personal properties of suspected rival cult members and their families were destroyed.”
Though efforts to speak with the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya were fruitless, a senior police officer at the Ughelli ‘B’ Division police station confirmed the incident when contacted.
The security source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “It was a cult clash and the police is on top of the situation. We have made some arrest including the Okada rider who we gathered instigated the attacks in the community.”
