Charges Against Arraigned Suspects Of Endsars Protesters In Ughelli Dropped By Delta State Govt

The Eight suspects remanded at the Sapele correctional facility by the Delta State Police command in connection with the murder of a policeman in Ughelli by #EndSARS protesters have been discharged and acquitted by the Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr Peter Mrakpor.
The Attorney General represented by the state legal counsel, O. N. Yusuf at the Ughelli Magistrate Court with suit No. MU/194C/2020 in a letter disclosed that the Delta State Attorney General has decided to drop all charges against the defendants and discontinue the case.

Fourteen persons had earlier been arraigned by the Delta State Police command before an Ughelli magistrate court in connection with End SARS Protest in Ughelli, that led to the death of a police corporal and an unidentified protester.

The police corporal identified as Stanley Etaga and the unidentified protester, were reportedly killed while an operative attached to the Eagle Net Squad, Sergeant Patrick Okuone, also sustained life threatening injuries during the clash that ensued during the protest at the Otovwodo axis of Ughelli.

 

Six of the suspects were arrested in connection with the unrest on the day of the protest, while the other eight were arrested in connection with the killing of the police corporal, attack on Sergeant Okuone, as well as the damaging of police vehicles during the protest.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, E. A Odjugo discharged and acquitted the Eight (8) defendants unconditionally with a charged to the Ughelli Area Commander, and Divisional Police Officer to release all vehicles, mobile phones and all items belonging to them unconditionally.
According to the Magistrate, “This court acknowledge receipt of a letter dated on  13th October, 2020, endorsed by the Delta State Hon Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice conveying a Nolle Prosequir present to section 211 (1)(c) of the constitution of Nigeria as amended has discontinued the criminal proceeding against the 1st -8th  defendants in this charged.
“This said letter, this court is informed indicates that the Hon Attorney General of Delta State hereby discontinued the criminal proceeding against all the defendants in this case. The charge is struck out, the 1st to 8th defendants are all discharged. He reads.
Those discharged are, Iboyi Emmanuel, Umukoro Rukevwe, Akpovwigho Eloho, German Oghenekevwe Precious, Moses Eduwokon Oke John, Ogbonna David and Prosper John.
