Apple’s Siri has always used Microsoft’s Bing search engine until now. Earlier this week the tech giant announced that they were switching to Google search immediately.
Users may have noticed that when you ask the voice assistant a question, the results are now from Google with a button to get additional results from Google.
Speaking to TechCrunch an Apple presentative said, “Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari.”
As yet, the transition isn’t complete with image results still being displayed from Bing although this is expected to change at a later date.
It is not clear if there has been a fallout or a change in agreements between Apple, Google and Microsoft.
Google pays Apple to be the default search engine on Apple’s Safari browser on iOS and Mac desktops — report to be around $3 billion per year, analysts have estimated.
Bing was first used for Siri in 2013 when iOS 7 was launched.
“Making sure customers can have access to the power of Bing where and when they need it has been a big focus of the work we have done over the past few years, and we are excited to work with
Apple to deliver it to Siri users this fall,” Microsoft said at the time in a blog post.
