The suppression of entitlements and benefits of the Ughelli North Local Government Council Legislature Arm by the Executive is a clear violation of democratic principles and a blatant disregard for constitutional responsibilities.
The denial of operational vehicles to the elected Councillors—who represent the people—undermines their ability to effectively perform their legislative duties.
It is unjust and undemocratic for the Executive Arm to withhold these entitlements, which are essential for the proper functioning of the Local Government system.
The separation of powers is a cornerstone of democratic governance, and it is critical for both the Legislative and Executive branches to be adequately supported in fulfilling their respective duties. The Chairman, Vice Chairman, Press Media Crew, and other staff members of the Executive are provided with operational vehicles to carry out their work, yet the elected Councillors, who play an equally crucial role, are denied the same benefits. This discrepancy is not only undemocratic but also goes against the principles outlined in the Delta State Remuneration and Salaries of Certain Public and Political Office Holders.
It is deeply shameful and embarrassing that elected Councillors are reduced to commuting on motorcycles, while the Executive arm enjoys privileges, including government vehicles for personal use. This is an oppressive act that harms the integrity of the democratic process and disrespects the office of the Councillor. The denial of their rightful benefits is an affront to the people they serve and undermines the core values of fairness, equity, and justice that should guide governance at all levels.
The people of Ughelli North should unite, irrespective of political affiliations, to demand fairness, justice, and proper allocation of resources for all elected officials , particularly the Councillors, so they can serve the people effectively.
