I joined Barclays Bank Plc, UK as a trainee through the bank’s Management Development Programme. Between 1988 and 1992, I rose to the position of Manager’s Assistant, Corporate Lending.
In late 1992, I joined Hill Samuel, a U.K. Merchant Bank, as an Investment Banking Executive.
In 1995, I joined the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC), UK (CDC Group) as an Investment Officer responsible for Asia & Pacific Regions. In 1996, I was promoted to Deputy Country Head, and was responsible for establishing the CDC Philippines Office. In March 1998, I returned to the London Office and was promoted to Investment Manager. During my time with CDC, I acquired significant project finance expertise by directly participating in several high profile project-financing transactions.
In June 1999, I was appointed Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning, Delta State. During my tenure, I transformed work attitudes and computerized the operations of the Ministry. At the end of my first tenure in office in 2003, I took a break to attend the prestigious Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme to prepare myself for higher responsibilities.
I was invited in late 2006, by one of the PDP Presidential Aspirants, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to join his small campaign team as Director of Finance and Strategy. Yar’Adua was elected President in April 2007.
In recognition of the significant role I played in the Presidential Campaign Organization, President Yar’Adua, in 2008, appointed me as Principal Secretary to the President (PSP) to take over the responsibilities of the out-going Chief of Staff. I remained in the Presidency until shortly after President Yar’Adua’s death in April 2010.
Avantgarde, an indigenous consulting firm focused on providing world-class project finance advice and monitoring services was established by me in late 2010.
In 2015, I was again appointed Commissioner of Finance, Delta State for a third time and occupied that position until May 2019. The following month I was appointed Chief of Staff to the Governor Sen. (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa.
