League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NIOWV), has condemned the alleged murder of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Women Leader, Mrs. Salome Acheju Abuh by suspected political thugs.

In a statement signed by its President, Rt. Hon. Dame Dr. Esther Uduehi, (PhD.) she stated that “the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), are pained by her death and condemn the barbaric act.

According to the statement, “we are alarmed at the Barbaric Act meted on a woman, Mrs. Salome Abu, in Kogi State following the Kogi Gubernatorial Elections which led to her burning to death with her charred remains and ashes scattered in her home, signifying the continuous oppression of women who are seen as a helpless group.

“We ask for Justice for Late Mrs. Salome Abu. Part of our mission is to sanitize elections in Nigeria. We can only do this by standing by the truth and calling for appropriate actions and reforms. We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately institute an inquiry into the circumstances that led to this tragic act.

The statement further said “We ask that all those found to be remotely or directly involved be given the maximum punishment and though compensation cannot bring her back to life for her family, we ask that her family be duly compensated.

“This act is shameful and barbaric and a slur on the image of Nigeria as a country and Government must take every action to ensure that such acts never occur again! God help Nigeria. God save Nigeria.”
