Students of the three campuses of the Delta State polytechnics, Ozoro, Ogwashi-Uku and Oghara recently held a sport fiesta tagged “Ibori sports fiesta 2019”
The event which was held at the Ozoro polytechnic stadium in lsoko North Local Government Area was in honour of the former governor of Delta state, His Excellency, Chief James Onanefe Ibori for establishing the institution of higher learning that has produced outstanding graduates from various fields of study.
The fiesta featured various track events and field competition such as 100, 200 and 400meters final race by selected students from the three campuses, football finals between Ozoro and Oghara campus football team, and Ozoro won Oghara with four goals to three.
The Student Union President, Comrade Wiska Anthony who spoke with newsmen at the event, noted that it was a unanimous decision reached by the executives of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the polytechnics to commemorate Chief James Onanefe Ibori for his role in the establishment of the three campuses of the great institution in Delta State adding that the sports fiesta will be observed once in two years in honour of governors with legacies on human capital and infrastructural development.
He commended the rector of Ozoro polytechnic, Prof Job Akpodiete, the management of the institution and the student Union government executives for their immense support and cooperation at facilitating the success of the event, he also urged the students to use the occasion to improve on sporting activities which to him, forms integral part of the nation’s economy.
On his part, the President of the Student Union government of Oghara campus, Comrade Itare Godspower noted that the establishment of the institutions has provided an alternative to students who could not gain admission in to the University due to low JAMB cut off marks and financial constraints. The treasurer of the executive arm of the Ozoro polytechnic, Mr. Akpobome Precious posited that Ozoro polytechnic stadium and other infrastructures in the three campuses cannot be found in some state and federal university in the country.
The climax of the ceremony which was attended by Hon Apije Benson, supervisory councilor for works, who represented the chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Hon Emmanuel Egbabor, staffs of fidelity bank, Abraka and other dignitaries, were presentation of medals by Comrade Wiska Anthony and other executive members of the student union government of the polytechnic, to the track and field athletes.
